Hard water spots, and why the Highland Lakes are brutal for them
It is the single most common thing we are called about around Marble Falls, and the most misunderstood. Half the time it wipes off. The other half it needs machine work — and knowing which is which saves you money.
What a water spot actually is
Hill Country water is hard: it carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When a droplet dries on a panel the water leaves and the minerals do not. What you are looking at is the ring of solids that got left behind.
That much is harmless. The problem is heat. On a panel sitting in Texas sun, those concentrated minerals become mildly caustic and start to eat into the surface below. Give it long enough and the spot is no longer sitting on the clear coat, it is a shallow crater in it.
Deposit or etch? Run your fingernail over it
A deposit sits proud of the surface. You can often feel it catch, and it will usually disappear when the panel is wet — because you have temporarily filled the texture with water.
An etch is the opposite. It stays visible when wet, and under a light held at a low angle you can see it as a dished distortion in the reflection rather than a spot on top of it. That one is not coming off with a chemical.
What removes each
Fresh deposits come off with a dedicated mineral or water-spot remover, worked gently on a cool panel and rinsed thoroughly. Vinegar diluted with water does much the same thing in a pinch. What you should not reach for is an abrasive polish, because you would be cutting clear coat to remove something that was only sitting on it.
Etching is machine work. We level the surface around the crater with a compound and a polisher, then refine the finish back. That is paint correction, priced accordingly, which is exactly why it is worth catching spots early.
Boats and gel coat get it worst
A boat lives in the water and then sits in full sun on a trailer or a lift. Every launch and recovery leaves a fresh coat of lake water to dry on a hot surface — and gel coat is more porous than automotive clear, so deposits key into it harder.
The single highest-value habit for a boat on Lake Travis, LBJ or Buchanan is drying the hull and topsides when it comes out, rather than letting the sun do it. It takes ten minutes and saves entire correction jobs.
How to stop them
Never let water dry on a hot surface in the sun. Wash in the shade or early. Rinse and dry after the lake. If your sprinklers catch the driveway, move the car or change the timer — sprinkler spotting is one of the most common causes we see and one of the easiest to fix.
A ceramic coating helps a great deal because water sheets off instead of beading and sitting. It buys you time and makes removal far easier. It is not a licence to let a wet vehicle bake dry.
When to call us
If it wipes off, handle it yourself — you do not need to pay anyone for that. If it stays when the panel is wet, or you can see it distorting the reflection, stop trying and call before someone attacks it with an abrasive and thins the clear coat.

How do I stop them in the first place?
Do not let water dry on the surface in the sun. Dry the boat after it comes out, rinse and dry a car that has been through sprinklers, and avoid washing a hot panel in direct sunlight.
Does a ceramic coating prevent water spots?
It makes them far less likely and much easier to remove, because water sheets off instead of sitting in droplets. It does not make the vehicle immune, and a coated surface left to air dry in the sun will still spot.
